There is really just the one dps turntable. However, its name is changed from dps 2 to dps 3 depending on the power supply being used with it.
The dps turntable structure comprises a series of layers, a laminate design comprising a dense foam mat which sits on your turntable support, then a high mass aluminium base, where the high torque motor attaches, also locates and retains three foamed elastomer pucks which in turn support the central layer with a decorative wooden surround available in a choice of wood finishes. Internally, this layer described as a heterogenous sandwich plinth, contains a laminate of wood and damping foils topped with a layer of cork which has the effect of stopping high frequency resonances getting into the top layer, the black acrylic top plate.
The top plate is where the tonearm and main bearing are attached and supported. Thus there is a rigid connection between the arm and main bearing, while the layered plinth is held in place by gravity and friction alone!
The bearing is an inverted design; the shaft made of Tungsten and locates a 3mm Ruby sphere which supports the weight of the platter. The bearing shaft uses an "O" ring and also some high viscosity silicone and oil mix to provide a reasonably high level of resistance to rotation. When this is coupled to a very high torque motor in order to overcome this resistance, it proves to be a very effective way of overcoming dynamic wow where the signals the cartridge, can on occasion cause drag and thus slow the platter down. Here however, the motor is designed to pull a load and therefore small variations down to the stylus friction are insignificant and will not affect the speed stability.
As a consequence of the motor and bearing design, there is no need to have a heavy platter designed to overcome dynamic wow, and so the platter is made from a both attractive and effective acrylic material, which also happens to be very stiff and exhibit good resonant frequency characteristics which won't interfere with the music either.
The result is a high mass turntable that is both easy to use and very musical indeed. It's also very flexible, being upgradeable from the more basic dps2 specification power supply and single phase motor, to the dps3 specification with three phase power supply and motor with very much improved sound quality.
The dps can be used to great effect with many arms including Rega, Linn, Naim Aro, SME or indeed with the fantastic dps damped uni-pivot arm as illustrated. A lid is available as an optional extra if required.
